Millions of people worldwide that are visually impaired due to cataracts–loss of vision due to lens clouding. The two current treatment options, the standard intraocular lens (IOL) and multi-focal IOL, force patients to choose between focusing ability and clear vision. Atia is a company formed by medical device incubator Shifamed that is developing a fluid-filled modular IOL that accommodates via ciliary muscle action to add both near field and distance focusing features to the standard toric lens. Atia’s target of having greater than three diopters in accommodating power is a strong differentiator that positions the Company for substantial market penetration.
