Twelve – Case Study

Twelve is the carbon transformation company, a new kind of chemical company built for the climate era. Twelve makes essential products from air, not oil. Its technology eliminates emissions by transforming CO2 into critical chemicals, materials, and fuels that today are made from fossil fuels. They call it carbon transformation, and it fundamentally changes how global citizens can address climate change, reduce emissions and reverse the carbon imbalance. Reinventing what it means to be a chemical company, Twelve is on a mission to create a climate-positive world and a fossil-free future through the power of chemistry.

Twelve’s carbon transformation technology converts captured CO2 (carbon dioxide) into products historically made from fossil fuels. According to research from Columbia’s SIPA Center on Global Energy Policy, replacing fossil feedstocks in the production of chemicals, materials, and fuels with renewable carbon from a point source or direct air capture could avoid nearly 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Twelve is now transforming emissions into products for the automotive, household, and apparel industries, as well as for government entities and global technology companies, by replacing petrochemicals and fossil-based transportation fuels with CO2Made® materials and carbon-neutral fuels like E-JetⓇ. Twelve’s partners include Mercedes-Benz, Procter & Gamble, Shopify, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the U.S. Air Force. Most recently, Twelve, Alaska Air Group Inc. (Alaska Airlines), and Microsoft signed the first-of-its-kind agreement to collaborate on advancing the market for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to include fuels derived from recaptured and renewable energy and working toward the first commercial demonstration flight in the United States powered by Twelve's E-Jet®.

A few years ago we had the opportunity to seed-finance a “Sustainability” startup that met the mind-and-heart investment criteria: trustworthy team with commitment and focus on key results; co-led by women (in the golden age of women leadership); state-of-the-art technology that will have a significant positive impact on the environment (clean technology); unique innovative value proposition; and a culture of cooperation and strategic partnership.

Rising Tide has formed a close relationship with Twelve and is opening business expansion opportunities with key business influencers in East Asia and the Middle East. The reason is to bring Twelve and its products to the region.
